Seemingly intelligent people dismiss The Monkees all the time. I think even the so called R&R Hall of Fame still snubs them. They had the best writers, great singers, top studio musicians and a massive broadcast platform.

The Monkees deserve alot of credit. It's Peter Tork playing the piano intro. They took a good song and made it great. Anne Murray also had a hit with it. But The Monkees hit the grand slam!

It's a perfect pop song. There used to be such a thing. Now, what is called pop music just....sucks. Oh, and...shame on We Five for passing on this tune. They would have made a ripping version that might have really made their career. Instead, they went nowhere after You Were On My Mind.

A lot of players play with a pick…but Joe’s sound stands out and is immediately recognizable upon the very first note you hear. For instance the Glen Campbell song Honey Come Back came over my radio a few weeks back. There was “that sound” again! I researched it and sure enough…there was Joe’s name in the lineup! Not surprised!

What a wonderful memory of this phenomenally talented - and very humble - man. I was fortunate enough to play (as a VERY run-of-the-mill hack drummer) a one-night charity gig in Durham, NC in the spring of '91 with Larry Knechtel, Dee Murray (legendary bass player) and Joe Khoury (a tremendously talented Nashville guitarist) and even looking back it is hard to believe how completely "unimpressed" with himself this man was. Such a HUGE career - and gone way too early at age 69. RIP Larry.

I'm from the UK, so the lyric never made sense anyway, but certainly "happy" doesn't fit with the "but" clause that comes between the white knight and not having any money. Makes more sense the way he wrote it, though sounds better the way they sang it. Does anyone know what a homecoming queen is? Is it a specific thing in the States?

yeah, I can tell you from lots of experience that as songwriters we often never know which of our songs will be number one, decade-edifying smash hits. like with my song _Mr. Honky and the Strawberry Jamboree?_ I just thought it was a ridiculous waste of time, but then, what do you know - my mom once said she liked the "Strawberry Jamboree" line, AND also that Strawberry jam is her favorite. so there you go. you never know. and so it goes with Mr. Stewart's _Daydream Believer_ worldwide number one sensation and my _Mr. Honky_ mom-kinda-favorable smash hit . . . with the BIG ones you often just don't know it's anything until you hear it played back in the studio.

Al Jardine was smart enough to know that without Brian Wilson he would be a dentist in Redondo Beach. He is a talented musician and a perfect supporting performer to Brian and his music. He is a survivor in the music business. I saw his show in recent years where he performs with his son, Matt, and Carnie & Wendy Wilson (Brian's daughters). Again, Al plays the supporting role well and is smart enough to have talented and personable singers like Matt, Carnie and Wendy to share the stage because as talented as he is Al is not a charm factory so having Matt, Carnie and Wendy really delegates perfectly the jovial good natured banter that helps his current shows.
